On October 1st, Hong Kong commemorated China National Day, this year celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. A beautiful fireworks lit up the night sky over Victoria Harbor. I watched from the Wanchai waterfront near the Convention Centre. Some new types of fireworks were added this year, including ones in the shape of the Chinese characters 中国六十（China 60) and also a set in which red lanterns exploded out of the fireworks, suspended in mid-air for a few moments before slowly drifting down and then disintegrating from hot sparks flying everywhere.

October 1st was also the also the last day of my Fulbright grant. Watching the fireworks for the second time while in Hong Kong, I feel like my journey has come full circle. Last year the fireworks marked the beginning of my time here, when I had only been living in Hong Kong for a month. There were still so many things I didn't know about the city, so many places left to explore. This time watching the fireworks reminded me of everything I learned and experienced here, how familiar Hong Kong has become, and all the memories I have made here.

Based on the pics I took and and my visit to my family's old house in a small village near Kaiping. The Toisan (Taishan) area in Guangdong is unique for its architectural style, called diaolous, or castle buildings. My family's village was part of that heritage. When many Chinese who left for the Americas returned, they built their homes with European elements infused into the style. The homes also proved useful during World War II, as their castle, fort-like structure proved to be a good defense against the Japanese invastion.

Saturday was a beautiful day. I went on a hike along Dragon's Back, this was my 5th time on the trail. But today's weather offered the most stunning views I've seen yet- visibility was great. Since August is the wettest month in Hong Kong, the hills were a magnificent bright green, the waters a clear and deep blue. I saw so many butterflies, and a giant spider clinging to its web. After the hike, we took the bus for a short ride to Shek O beach. In 35 degree C weather, the hot sand burned our feet, but the water was really refreshing. It's days like this that make me fall in love with Hong Kong all over again.

Went back to Sham Shui Po, this time with the big video camera I borrowed from the university. Another unbelievably hot day. I walked down Hoi Tan Street, where my Mom and her family first lived in Hong Kong. I stopped for a cold drink at a tea place, and made small conversation with another customer, me speaking in Mandarin, him speaking to me in Cantonese.

I have really grown to like this area, which feels like a throw-back to the past. There were some gems of buildings that looked like colonial era (maybe the 20s and 30s?) that are rare to find on Hong Kong island.

Went walking around Sham Shui Po on a hot hot Saturday afternoon. Sham Shui Po was where I first stayed when I came to HK. I came back to take some more photos of the streets and buildings. It was strange returning, I hadn't been to this neighborhood in almost 10 months already. As I was walking, I found a small shop that sold those large plastic vinyl bags that are great for holding just about everything. I was really just trying to take photos of the sewing machine, which looked pretty ancient. Later when I uploaded the photos, I saw the Yankees hat in the background. Oh, New York, how I miss you!

My grandmother worked hard to support her family, sewing and doing embroidery work in Hong Kong. The textile industry was booming during this time due to the influx of available workers and the capital and technology brought from down from Shanghai. I wonder what it was like for her...

Last Sunday I went to see an old public housing estate that was open to the public for the last time before the government closes it- for historic preservation, renovation, I'm not sure.

The Mei Ho House was one of the first public housing projects the Hong Kong government undertook in 1954, as a response to the devastating fires that leveled thousands of homes in the squatter village in December of 1953. The public housing estates were an answer to the overwhelming numbers of refugees that swelled Hong Kong's population by millions in the early 1950s. It provided shelter in fire-proof structures, albeit small and not so design-friendly.

I first saw the Mei Ho House coming down the road from JCCAC. My first thoughts were it looked a little like a prison, because it was behind barbed wire and a fence. It also looked eerily deserted, and the structure itself was un-inviting in design and taste. Boxy, decrepit, with peeling paint. The day hot and humid, I quickly thought how unbearable living there must have been in the summer months. No air-conditioning, sweaty, cramped stuffy rooms, the smell of rotting food, garbage, human sweat. This was an upgrade from the squatter villages? It was hard to imagine living conditions worse than this…

My first view of the H-block style housing estate. It was swarming with visitors on this late Saturday morning. I felt really happy that so many local Hong Kong people were taking an interest in their local heritage by visiting this historic site.

Faded peeling paint. Balconies facing outwards, long corridors. Geometrical, simple. Six stories. No elevators. Gates and bars.

Hot sun beating down.

Visitors with big professional cameras. One man takes our picture. Concrete, concrete concrete. Nothing soft or organic left. A hard empty shell.

In the first flat, crowded with people taking photos. The apartment is a small rectangular box.

The front door a faded mustard yellow. A tiny bathroom, big enough for a sink and toilet off to the right just inside the entrance. A front window. White walls, no windows except all the way in the back, coming in through the window/kitchen.

Things from decades ago..the 60s, the 70s? Plastic flowers. Ovaltine. A ceramic statue of Guan-Yin, Chinese goddess of mercy. A Chinese bible of sorts. A bright green mini-fridge. Very 70s. Horlicks. Thermoses. A cassette player and cassette tapes. The linens, table cloths, dresser covers, none of it matches. Things just there, randomly, but all necessities. Nothing is decorated, just put together. An old tv. An old radio. An old calendar, time frozen. Old tin cans hold nothing. Small beds, folding tables, folding chairs. Plastic coverings, plastic for protection.

We meet a woman, she and her husband speaks English. She looks to be in her 50s. She has come to the Mei Ho House because she was born there. They still live in Hong Kong, out in New Territories. The house she grew up in is not open to the public. It must be a very special feeling to be back. She remembers playing outside with her friends, but I don’t think she remembers much.

The corridors are long and empty, but once they must have been filled with children running up and down the corridors. Parents who walked home from a long day of work at a factory. Grandparents and elderly, joints stiff, backs aching, slowly shuffling down, one step at a time. There is no rush. Time is still.

I went to the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre out in Shek Kip Mei to see a photography exhibit on life in the old public housing estates. Large public housing projects were built in the 1960s to accommodate the large number of refugees who had fled the turmoil happening on mainland China. Now the estates are being torn down, their purpose served. The exhibit is an attempt to capture and remember the texture and culture of the lives of the people who occupied these buildings. The photography was really beautiful. JCCAC itself is housed in an old estate block, renting out space for artists and arts organizations.

Something from what my Mom told me about her childhood in HK- she would go out to Victoria Park when it was hot, since there was no AC. They would lie out in the park at night. She also really liked ghost stories and Chinese mythology. There is a myth that the emperor's wife ate a magic pill and floated to the moon. The flowers are bauhinias, native to HK.

June 4th, 2009- 20th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square Massacre

Today is the 20th anniversary of that pivotal event in 1989. When it happened, I was exactly 6 and a half years old. I don't remember anything about it, I was most likely playing with my Barbies. At 6 and a half, I wasn't thing about China. I wasn't thinking about anything but how much I loved summer, the sound of our Chinese pagoda wind-chime ringing in the warm summer breeze that blew in through the screen door, and if I would be allowed to have ice-cream for dessert. My Chinese language abilities at this age consist of a few key words in Cantonese: ping-gaw (apple), bay-gaw (nose), jo son (good morning), jo tow (good night), daw jie (thank you), cha siu bao (roast pork bun). Essentials.

Today I am exactly 26 and a half years old, and I'm in Hong Kong, missing that cool summer breeze (it's hot and rainy here) and thinking a lot about China, Tiananmen, and my future. My Chinese language skills are equal to that of a 6 and a half year old. It's progress.

My first experience learning about Tiananmen happened in high school, in my 9th grade world history class. I remember I did a big report on Deng Xiaoping, who was the leader after Mao and authorized the military to end the protests. I also remember watching a documentary about the events. But since then, it's been a long time since I thought much about it.

In honor of this day, I am lucky to be in Hong Kong, and not the mainland. Here there will still be a memorial candle light vigil in the evening, and people here can still talk freely and openly about the protests. Hong Kong will be the only "official" part of China allowed an open and free demonstration.

In the afternoon I go with my friend Paul, the other HK research Fulbrighter, to an art response to the June 4th 20th anniversary out in an artist commune near Kowloon City. We take the ferry from North Point and arrive at the Cattle Depot Artist Village, which was once a cattle slaughter house. The buildings are old-fashioned brick structures, long and cavernous, with a touch of Chinese flare to them, set among now more modern apartment buildings, shabby governmental residences, and Hong Kong's TownGas power plant.

The artwork is all done by artists around my age, who don't have any memories of Tiananmen either. Their responses come from their own personal feelings about the event. The pieces are varied, with different types of media employed. There are photographs, videos, sculptures, linoleum etchings, Lego block re-creations, and other mixed-media works. Paul and I like a poster of The Tank Man with a quote from the Hebrew bible below the image:"I have seen slaves on horseback while princes go on foot like slaves." (Ecclesiastes 10-7)

There is also a nice piece made of a wooden block at a 90-degree angle with a mirror to its right, around a foot high. Carved into the wood is the Roman numeral IV. In the mirror the reflection is VI. Together the mirror and wood show the important date: VI IV. 6/4

I also liked a video that required the viewer to wear 3-D glasses. When you closed your right eye, you saw news footage and documentary images of the protest. When you closed your left eye, you saw Chinese military (perhaps propoganda) footage. With both eyes open, the images overlap and blend together. But it rests with the viewer which images they want to see, and how they edit the footage by opening and closing their eyes.

The last piece we looked at was actually the first one the viewer would see upon entering the exhibit. It was a series of photographs of the artist at the time of the massacre. She is 3 years old in 1989, and she poses with her parents in a park in Hong Kong, beside its own version of the Goddess of Democracy statue. Above the photos she includes a poem:

At night, I decide to check out the remembrance vigil being held in Victoria Park. I arrive pretty late at 9:30pm, the rally started at 8:00pm. There are already a lot of people making their way home.

My feelings upon entering the park are ones of great respect, awe and emotion, as I see before me the largest gathering I have ever witnessed in Hong Kong, or anywhere for that matter. Hong Kong University reported the following day there could have been over 100,000 people in the park. The main square is the size of 6 soccer fields and 1 basketball court. Inside people of all ages-young, old, parents, children, students, workers, gathered together, many holding candles wrapped in a paper cone, and listened intently to the speaker's passionate voice ringing out over the booming loudspeaker. I could only watch from the edge of the court, the crowd an impenetrable wall of bodies. There were moments when everyone raised their candles in unison high into the air, the soft glow of the flames a silent but very visible affirmation of the supporters in remembrance of those events that took place on June 4th, 1989. The small flames, amassed together, harnessed a power and brightness that almost matched that of lights of Causeway Bay's buildings in the background.

I made my way to my usual jogging path, but this night there were no joggers. I watched as an elderly woman cradled her candle on a park bench. A few minutes later a couple with their two young sons walked by. The elderly woman gave the candle to the small boy to hold, and this to me felt so symbolic of the purpose of this remembrance event. As the candle passed from her hand to his, it felt as if she were saying, take this candle, and don't forget what happened, even if you don't understand now, even if you weren't there. Don't forget to love your freedom. The family then posed for pictures taken by their other small son.

Around the park people sang together songs printed in the program book. The general feeling of the crowd was calm, peaceful, and orderly-three adjectives I don't normally associate with a gathering of 100,00 people. I felt safe, and that is also not something I usually feel in crowds a fraction of this size back home in New York. But that is what is special about Hong Kong- the acceptance of crowded living quarters, cramped streets, bumping into people constantly. It is part of everyday life, and the Hong Kong locals learn to just accept that and take it all in stride with patience and (most of the time) politeness.

At 10:00pm the vigil came to an end, and then those 100,000 people made their way out of the park, flooding the streets of Causeway Bay. But again, a dignified orderliness marked the tone of the exodus.

In the seven months I have been living here, this occassion marked for me a turning point and view on Hong Kong and its people. I suddenly realized how lucky and special Hong Kong is, an enclave of freedom among a massive giant of censorship. While I have usually witnessed a reluctance to vocalize opinions in the classrooms at my university, I have seen this day the tempered way in which they do exercise their freedom. Patient, orderly, and quiet, and with sheer numbers alone, they made their opinions known with a whisper, more powerful than any roar.

Chinese Painting: Sunny Bamboo

I started a Chinese painting class, which is a lot of fun, and I've missed holding a real paint brush in my hand. The class is taught in both Cantonese and English, but most of the students speak Cantonese. We are given a demonstration and then told to copy it exactly. I like the teacher, he's so fast he makes it all look so easy. I'm having a bit of trouble adjusting to how wet or dry the brush should be, how much ink to use to create the values. It's not a super forgiving medium. Here's a running dialogue of what the teacher says when he comes around to see how I am progressing:

"This bamboo no good, too sharp at corner. This bamboo stalk too high. See mine? Must be lower than other bamboo. You paint too many leaves, only 3, not 4!"

Then he proceeds to circle all the areas on my painting where my bamboo has deviated from his. My bamboo must conform to the status, no individual bamboo here please!

Mid-Autumn Festival

On Sunday evening I went to see the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay neighborhood. We watched a 220 year old Fire Dragon Dance, in which the dragon was made entirely out of burning incense. It was different from the other dragon dances I've seen in Chinatown, except the dragon was real slow in making its appearance, and Mom and I had already melted into puddles of sweat. We were "chee chee nup nup" (Cantonese for sticky).
We then walked to Victoria Park where crowds swarmed the special celebration grounds. It was so cute to see all the children holding their little lanterns that they picked out for the holiday. I equate it to the tradition of picking out a pumpkin for Halloween. The lanterns come in all different shapes and varieties. Traditional lanterns are made of paper and wire and are usually in the shape of bunnies or starfruit. More modern lanterns are like plastic blow-up toys, and many popular choices are Pixar's Cars and Buzz Lightyear, Disney's Stitch, My Melody, and Hello Kitty tops them all. There were dance and singing performances and elaborate lantern displays for families to enjoy under a bright and beautiful full moon.

A Reunion

I went with my Mom to see her childhood friend, whom she hasn't seen since leaving Hong Kong. I asked if they recognized each other after all these years, and they said it wasn't physcial appearances that sparked recognition, but something they felt when they saw one another. The three of us went for yum cha to celebrate. Although I couldn't join in on their conversation, I enjoyed watching them catch up on old times.

1 Gravity-Defying Cable Car, 1 Very Tall Buddha, 268 Steps, 1 Old Fishing Village, 4 Souvenir Magnets = 2 Very Tired Lantau Island Sightseers

We spent the day doing sightseeing on Lantau Island. After a speedy subway ride, we took the Ngong Ping 360 cable car up the mountains to the Po Lam Monastery and Tian Tian Buddha. We enjoyed sweeping views of the mountains, where hiking trails are plentiful and development has not yet taken hold. The giant Buddha proves a great workout for building strong legs. I'd like to see Rocky run up these steps! We ate lunch at Tea Garden Restaurant, where I enjoyed a fried taro root cake shaped like a fish, and really really good tea. Then it was off to Tai O fishing village, a remote area so vastly different from modern Hong Kong. We walked through the markets selling all types of seafood. I enjoyed seeing how they dry the fish, some of them being salted and dried in backyards next to laundry.

Hello, Hong Kong!

My first view of the mountains from Hong Kong Airport.

After 15 hours, 4 airplane meals, and 2 stuffed suitcases later, I have finally arrived in Hong Kong to begin my Fulbright grant year! My mom and I landed in the Hong Kong airport this evening, glad to be finally off the plane and on land again! This is my first time in Hong Kong, and for my mom it's her first time back to her childhood home after decades away.

Here are some of my first impressions of the city (in my delirious sleep deprived state):

It's multi-culturalism. All signs and announcements are made in both English and Cantonese. My mom talked to both airport workers in both languages, and she started giving English lessons to the taxi driver, who wanted to improve his English. She taught him the following:

"Pay me first, I will wait for you."
"Bi-racial." (the taxi driver said he calls racially mixed people "mixed pots." We taught him this other term)
"Racial discrimination" that was a hard one for him to say!
"Can you help me look for the number?"

She was even able to haggle the price down, maybe because she helped him so much! Cars also drive on the opposite side of the road due to Britsh colonial influence. One big surprise for me was finding a Pret A Manger, an organic sandwich chain I frequented in NYC, inside the airport!

Really really tall buildings. All the buildings are like skyscrapers, very different from a lot of the low rise 6-story buildings of New York. They are beautiful at night when all the lights are on.

Hot and Humid! That's the weather forecast for the rest of the week. Our air conditioners even have an extra feature to cope with it.

Tomorrow it's off to university to get acquainted!

And They Kept On Playing

Last week I decided to spend some quality time with my Dad before I head off to Hong Kong for a year. I went to watch him play with his softball team, The Amigos, part of a northern New Jersey senior softball league.
My Dad has been playing softball for a really long time. I remember going to watch him play when I was five, and since I wasn't really into sports back then, I brought my dolls along with me. So I thought it would be fun to tag along once again and cheer him on. The Amigos are all 60-75 years old, and they are still playing ball. They were so excited to have a fan come (I was the only spectator) and watch them play and take their pictures. They talked to me about their children and granddaughters in between kicking some butt against Union.
In senior softball, your team can only score a maximum of 5 runs per inning. I guess this helps keep the games more interesting and competitive. Sometimes they only play 5 or 6 innings a game if one team is winning by an insanely large lead. Some players could only bat, and they had pinch runners to help them out. There were also a few hits and fly balls that some of the older players just couldn't run fast enough to catch, but I loved the camaraderie and good will between teammates and between the teams.
My Dad hit four home-runs that day, and almost ran down his teammate in front of him as he rounded the bases. Oops! His teammates kept joking that he was showing off for me. After two games, the Amigos were the undistibuted champs. Sal, the team manager held a brief post-game meeting and then I took a team photo on the bleachers. We headed off to the car. I felt like the proud parent for once, and joked with my Dad I'd take him for ice cream. But it was only 12pm and we had not even had lunch yet. Early bird rules apply even to softball.
I would love to someday make a documentary about a senior softball or sports team. It just seems like such a great subject for a movie. I love that despite their age, the players still make a commitment to pursue the things they love in life. I'll have to file this away in my list of projects to do.

Finally starting a new project. I got really inspired watching the documentary on the Pixar Shorts DVD. I'm hoping to develop these characters into a series of 1 minute shorts. Should be much more manageable than my last film ( I hope!) So here's some character sketches I've doodled. Trying to work out the penguin design.
